Gotta love your optimism Goochy, but I don't share it!

And even if your descriptions are on the mark, plenty can happen before the Ashes. Harmison is known to be mentally weak & Flintoff injury prone.

On another note, where the hell is Beau Casson? Is he injured? If not, why isn't he in the squad?

Fair enough Blair - I didn't expect you to!!

Look, I'm being honest. Last time out, I said we would lose 4-1.

This time it looks very close, and if I had to go one way I honestly think we might edge it. Our home support will be vital. Gottaa get the country behind us again.

Gooch......pretty sure most would agree with me. Harmison is mentally scarred by the Aussie Cricket Team. He may bowl okay against other countries but 8 out of 10 matches against Australia he goes missing in action. So if the ashes hinge on him they'll stay in Oz. If Flintoff can play with Sidebottom and Anderson it will be competitive but the key for the poms if any would be Monty plus being able to make decent scores which really England hasn't done on a consistent basis.

I would not write Australia off just yet - agreed we haven't got a quality spinner yet but i don't think we can judge Australia just yet........after all it is in India. Let's just wait and see what transpires this summer before we cast any dispersions.

Was a good fight back late by the Aussies.. But FT, 2o2s post is hardly foolish - he has gone for plenty and could go for much more if Dhoni gets going too..

As for the Aussies in the Ashes, there is still hope of finding some decent bowlers and they aren't in that much trouble cos nearly every side struggles when they go to India.. There is plenty of domestic cricket to be played between now and the Ashes, so dont get your hopes up too much Goochy.. Aaron Heal from WA has been bowling a treat, even though it is in the Ford Ranger and Xavier Doherty from Tassie could be another option, instead of Krezja..

and yes Goochy .... far easier for the poms to win in back in the old dart with the crowd behind them.

i was talking about the post at 0/70. Yes he might of been expensive but only he and Johnson look like taking wkts yesterday and if he wasn't in the team India would probably be 2 or 3 for 400 +.

But i don't disagree with surely there must be a better spinner but that being said it was only White and him in the squad. At least he spins it.

It's not their fault they're in the squad....perhaps a look at the selectors would be a better option.

Rob - no-one is writing off Australia. Stop trying to talk a quality outfit into the underdog role!!

I am saying that they are (obviously) not the force they were and next summer will be very close. I think we will edge it.

Stef - Aaron Heal played a full season in our league in 2006. He got 42 wickets at 24 apiece and went for 3.5 an over!!! Nice bloke though.

Even Fridge took him for a ton!

i don't think Australia will be the underdog.....pretty sure we'd go it as favourites. Australia is going through a transitional period but even taking that into account there are some quality bats going around that would step straight into the Aussie team and preform Marsh, Nuske for example and maybe even Hussey from Victoria but it's not that easy with the bowlers. It even took the great Glen McGrath 2-3 yrs to become what he was. Preety sure the Aussie bat will out perform England........time will tell though.

Maybe Cam White should grow his hair then and perhaps then he'll spin something.

And Beau Casson ??? he went on the tour to the Indies (i think) didn't he. As Lois said did he get injured ? or just omitted ?

I thought he was meant to be the up-and-come-a?

You obviously havent watched us too much Matt.

1) Flintoff - say no more. Absolutely firing at the minute
2) Harmison. Right back on song after a full season of county cricket. Countless overs and over 60 wickets and led Durham to the flag. He has the ball coming our perfect - something I have never seen him do before. Immaculate seam position pointing at first slip time after time. Also bowling up to 93mph again.
3) Sidebottom. Arguably now the best swing bowler in the world
4) Anderson. A revelation in the last year or so. Finally delivering. 50 wickets in last 2 series at home at 26 apiece.
5) Panesar. Best left arm spinner in the world. Including Vettori. 80 wickets at 27 apiece in home test matches.

Anyone coming through? Simon Jones just played his first full season back from injury and won the National Averages.

That ok for you? ;)

Let's not get carried away with stats that come out of County cricket Gooch, it's 10 rungs below the quality of the Aussie team.

Glad you added "arguably" in that Sidbottom statement.

No use pointing the seam to 1st slip if you can't hit the pitch

County cricket is now a VERY good standard mate. Don't be fooled by years gone by.

Durham for example have Benkenstein, Harmison, Collingwood, Chanderpaul, Mustard, Di Venuto, Plunkett etc
