As soon as I got there, the umpires made it pretty obvious they didn't want to play. To be fair to thhe Springy lads, at first they were keen to play - why wouldn't they? They had a far better side than us.
Lots of talk went on. We said we definitely wanted to play. Next thing I knew, the game was called off by the umpires well before the scheduled start. I do not know whether the SSCC lads still wanted to play or not. It all happened very quickly.
In my opinion the pitch didn't look good. But it rarely does at our place. However, several experinced heads said it would play ok.
Just after 1pm, the wicket was already looking a bit better and we had a full scale practise on the pitch using 2 brand new 2 piece balls. I can't think of one ball that "popped" all day.
We took plenty of video footage to back record the state of the pitch and I feel we will need it after seeing the umpires report.
I would be interested to know if the umpires get paid for what happened. I honestly don't know.
What I do know is that I stood in blazing sun and played cricket all afternoon. Sadly it wasn't against SSCC as it should have been.
what an absolute disgrace a wicket wasn't prepared on saturday with the weather we have had. it's the end of october for fcuk sake. sscc should be awarded 6 points, mmcc fined and the curator given a dole form. and yes i am serious.
The Umpire's have a duty of care to all players, if they feel that there is a risk of injury to any player we will err on the side of caution. As for getting paid the answer is yes, but would recieve a nominal amount for expenses as for wet weather

You guys are missing the fact that Paul said the wicket always looks bad at Strathaird which it does but it always seems to play fine. Common sense would of been to listen to Thommsy and the experience heads who know the deck best and get a start and if anything untoward happens call it off. For the game to be called off before 1pm is a disgrace, at worse the curator could of been given to 1.30pm to get it right and have the overs reduced if need be. Clearly the umpires involved had a cup BBQ to attend.

your fcuking kidding surely? give him til 1.30? he has had 6 months how much longer does he need. there are NO excuses.
I don't disagree, but it is about playing cricket when the umpires got there & they should have done there best to get a game up and going which in my opinion they probably didn't.

beaver are you actually thinking about what you write? do you think if the wicket was remotely decent that the umpires would have played? it was obviously no good. stop lookin for excuses to make it look like you are being nice to the club you burnt. you love cricket more than anyone on here and if your game was ever called off you'd be into the curator straight up.
Slocs...I agree there is no excuse. Quite simply, it should have looked better. But even in one hour with a bit of sun on it looked better. By 1:30 when we went out there, the pitch was definitely ok to play Turf 2 cricket on. Even though it didn't really look like it was!
No idea mate. I know we were always way behind everyone else due to the bad weather and the council repeatedly postponing the preperation work they had to do.
I've not much more to add though. I don't know how many hours it was rolled for.
More questions would have been asked if play had gone ahead and something did happen, How would you like to explain that to a Umpires match committee " Yeah we had doubts on it but he said that it looks like Sh*t but plays well, then some kid gets his face ripped off "

Well with the weather looking to come up trumps from now on one should expect Strathaird to be a road for the rest of the year NO EXCUSES. What is done is done.

Helmets are not infallible Paul, buts that not the point. It would take a lot of explaining by the umpires to justify playing on a wicket they had doubts on
This is won of the reasons i left maranarfa mefodist. i was sick of telling the curater to stop eating hot dogs and smoking cigerets and get out on the ground and work on the pich. i wood have made 1000 runs if he new what he was doing. i'm glad to see the back of the place!
Brett...MMCC is never, I repeat NEVER going to be a road. The soil is just not good enough. End of story. It would be great if we could get it relayed with the same soil as SSCC have but it isnt going to happen as supplies of this stuff are very low and it is only really used to repair pitches that already have it. The cost of buying it in bulk is astronomical.
