Prince, if you look at his numbers he would have obviously liked to have done better bearing in mind his credentials and talent but to lead us to the 20/20 title, MCG match and a premiership I think he would rightfully be well pleased with his contribution. Top scored in both matches and picked up some very handy wickets in the finals also..
Just named Notts' player of the month, fair effort considering Hashim AMLA played the 1st 4 county matches of the season. Great player and a cracking bloke who will be missed by all at BRCC.
Fair enough mate, I just thought that a bloke with his credentials averaging 30 at the stamp was average. But as you said when it counted he got the job done.......can't complain about that.
Wasn't comparing the two Gooch - obviously at the moment Franks is better but I think you'd agree that with the bat he didn't perform 100%. When Ayresys gets in, he hits tonnes. Would be just as good as any other bloke whose hit 500-600 runs in t1 before.
Ayres will make more runs this year than Franks did last year. He's coming off 3 ton's and 600 plus at Premier level last year. I don't think really matters how old you are if you're still in that sort of form....
Not sure if Ayres will break the Turf I runs record in a season, which is held by Jude Fernando (dec). But Goochy, seriously, Franks is a star player and one of the best all-rounders ever to play in DDCA but Warren Ayres is, has & always will be a f%$king run machine. He has faced the best on offer for more than 20 years and made more runs than anyone could imagine. The guy is a freak. The only thing that will stop Ayres making huge amounts of runs next season will be if he runs out of batting partners.
Record holder District/Premier Cricket for most runs scored. 16,000 plus runs 2 x Ryder Medalist winner District/Premier average @43 which spans over 20 years. First Class batting @33
Graeme Ashley Hick
65 tests @31.32 First Class @52 with 136 (100's) and over 41,000 runs.
Now, before all the 'poms' on the forum go 'coco-bananas'....I'm not suggesting Ayres is better than Hick or anything like that, but as you can see, averages on occasions can be harsh. Both are/were brilliant within a specific level....
Just something to consider...Franks is great but seriously, some of the First Class Cricket being played in England in recent years, just doesn't stack up against the quality of cricket that has been played over the past 20 years within our District ranks and our Domestic First Class Competition.
What am I missing here? He has a first class average of 33 and doesn't bowl. Why did he do so poorly for Victoria?
To say he would have played 50 tests for England is an embarrassing comment.
England were terrible around the time he would have been at his best , u cannot tell me half the blokes who played for england between 1990 and 2000 were worthy of representing there country , i cannot be bothered peeling off names but i am sure you get my point ....
Good post Legal but Hick failed at test level and dominated County. Ayres failed at State cricket and dominated league cricket. A slight difference. Anyway - time will tell. If he doesn't get 700 runs after what everyone has said I will consider his season a failure.
Great argument persuader.....
You said he would play 50 tests, not play the odd one - that would say he is as good as others who played 50 tests. Tell me which England players who played 50 tests he would be better than.
Jason - what are your thoughts on why he do so poorly at State level?
