Surely there could be better ways to determine what happens next week? Seems crazy that we bowled 28 overs saturday yet they could face another 72 if they choose too.

Even if your right slocs, mordi could technically bat for 75 overs next saturday in your game making a result impossible. Wont happen but could. Seems silly.

under no circumstances can a first innings be more than 80 overs. i am 99.9% certain. except of course in finals when its 90.

Yeah, it can mate. Its clearly in the rules. Rightly so too. If you are coming off every half hour or so for rain, you are unable to bat properly as you have to keep restarting. You should not be penalised for not having a clear run at batting 80 overs....... I know this probably doesn't help results, but it is the fair thing to do.
As an umpire Jake I thought you would have been aware that the dont bat the entire 80 overs next week if they've already batted some of them
As one of the best captain's in the league I would have thought you would be aware that all the answers are in the handbook. You will find this one on page 37.

This situation hasn't arisen for about 12 years as generally play gets underway and rain comes after 60 overs have been bowled. Finals rules are different because of wash out days used as a third day to get 180 overs in.
Jake and Darrell are right. Look at Rule 19.3.5 in Darrel Hair's post and the highlighted section and there is your answer given the other conditions of 60 minutes or more lost and not reachng 60 overs on day one.
If you don't like it apply for a rule change through the Board of Management meetings.
