Forfeiting half way through a match
Permalink Closed

Firstly, I apologise, this is not DDCA related, but is about cricket and not relaly argy bargy style either.

The local comp up here (warragul and district) have had an interesting one this week, and is still undecided.

In Division 4, Drouin were playing warragul in a two day game. In the first week Drouin rolled warragul and got the runs so had first innings points at the close of play.

Second week was a wash out, all cricket called off on Friday so no chance of an outright, well so you would think.

Drouin are claiming that Warragul phoned them on Thursday and said they would be forfeiting the second half of the match. Drouin are now claiming outright points because they had a result decided prior to the second week being abandoned.

Surely, if you were that short that you would have to forfeit week 2, you would at least have to have the captain, or another team member acting in his place turn up on the day and pull the pin.

So what do the great minds of the DDCA think. Does anyone see this as a ligitimate result? I would think that once all cricket is cancelled for week two then all games should revert back to their positions at the end of day 1.

Forward this to either Parkfield or Buckley as they seem to bend the rules as they seem fit

The umpires must be informed of the forfeiture. If no play was scheduled then no umpires means no forfeiture.

Law 14 3 of Laws of Cricket 2010   captain shall notify the opposing captain and the umpires of his decision to declare or to forfeit an innings. Law 10.1(e) (Insufficient time to complete rolling) shall apply.

There always have to be umpires.. These must be decided on the day where no official is appointed and as the day was called off then = no umpires -=no forfeiture.

Only an opinion but Law 43 common sense must prevail

Ok, so you are saying that officially there are no umpires appointed until we get to games on a saturday and work out that there are no paid ones showing up. At that point we appoint an umpire (hey Johno, throw the vest on, your umpiring), which means the captains technically can't forfeit on Thursday night, mid game.

This is still being played out, but apparently by the WDCA rule book all forfeits must be in writing to the association, and they are to pass it onto the club. The grey area is whether this applies to just forfeiting an innings, rather than the match. I'll let you know how it finishes up.

Just to piss Camel Toe off, and waste more of his time, I thought I would let you know that the forfeit stands, despite there being no play on day 2.
