A SENIOR cricket official's desperate attempt to umpire in finals matches has landed him on the sidelines and in the middle of a cheating scandal.
John Kristy Parker's behaviour has also prompted Cricket Victoria to consider introducing police checks on umpires after the 56-year-old last month received a suspended jail term for sending teenage girls lewd photographs on internet chat sites.
The former Dandenong and District Cricket Association senior official, a repeat sex offender, has been suspended from the league indefinitely after he was found to have doctored match reports to boost his chances of umpiring in finals.
Parker, who umpired under the assumed name John Kristy, claimed computer hackers had hijacked his online password, using it to improve his ratings from captains and downgrade other umpires' report cards. But the story didn't convince a league panel investigating the claims.
DDCA president Michael Hawking said the association only became aware of Parker's sex crimes while investigating the cheating claims.
In 2005, Parker was convicted after pleading guilty to 13 counts of stalking and 83 counts of using a mobile phone to menace or harass underage girls.
"The captains' reports were obviously tampered with, and during the consideration of that aspect we were told there was some other information (regarding his charges) we should be aware of," Mr Hawking said.
Dandenong Magistrates' Court last month heard that in 2007 Parker sent more than 300 explicit emails to two teenage victims, including 83 explicit pictures to a 12-year-old. He was given a six-month suspended sentence and placed on the sex offenders' register for 15 years.
Mr Hawking said the case had prompted the league to introduce mandatory Working With Children checks for all league umpires who have contact with children.
Cricket Victoria chief executive Tony Dodemaide said the organisation was considering making the checks compulsory across the state.
