Hallam-Kalora Park club president Ian Baker said two players, a batsman from Hallam-Kalora Park and a player fielding for Dandenong West, had an altercation on the field.
"As things happen in finals or in any sport words were spoken... there was a physical altercation between two players,'' Mr Baker said.
"There was an altercation between two players, one on our side and one on the opposition side...our F-Grade captain thought it best to take his players from the ground and not return.''
He said the captain was worried about the safety of younger players in the side.
"We forfeited the game and that was due to safety concerns due to the number of ... under 21s players we have in the team,'' Mr Baker said.
He said reports that both teams then started fighting were not correct and said he did not know what was said to spur on the fight.
"In my opinion the captain did the right thing in taking the team from the field and refusing to continue to play on the Saturday and refusing to return on the Sunday.''
Mr Baker said the Dandenong District Cricket Association was investigating the incident
