Australia's team for the first Test against the Yarpies isn't looking as settled and assured as the scribes would have us believe.
With Watto likely to bat at 5, the opening pair remains problematic. warner hasn't batted for a while and cowan hasn't been able to go on with a long innings.
Clarke, Ponting, Watto and M. Hussey are shoe-ins as the middle order.
Wade should have the w/k job but you never know with NSW using its bullying power to get Haddin back (despite what Clarke says publicaly).
Then comes the problem with the bowling sub-team. Lyon hasn't show he is likely to take more than a couple of wickets, let alone win a game.
Starc is the only firm quick as he has form and brings the left-armers angle (and bounce) to the table. Most pundits (especially Victorian) have Siddle and Pattinson as the other quicks but their combined figures of 1 for almost 200 (ok, 1-188) hardly instils great hope despite the damage they caused to a demoralised, disjointed and ill-disciplined WA team.
Anyone care to name their team for the first Test?
Squad for Test series against the Yarpies that starts at the Gabba on Friday week (followed by Tests at the Adelaide Oval (November 22-26) and the WACA in Perth (November 30-December 4), is: M. Clarke (capt), D. Warner, E. Cowan, S. Watson, R. Ponting, M. Hussey, M. Wade, P. Siddle, B. Hilfenhaus, M. Starc, J. Pattinson, and N. Lyon.
i would love to have watto open and we find another middle order bat, but he will be very handy at 5 or 6. hopefully openers can look after punter, pup, watto and huss.
well, well, watto's calf causes him to leave the field in his first over? even if scans clear him, can Australia's X factor player be risked for 1st Test? and punter's finger? won't it be a juicy target for messrs styne and morkel? a fine mess on the eve of a tough campaign. odds firming by the minute for yarpies.
lunch on first day. starc should have played. would have attcked stumps/body more than siddle, who keeps bowling a line that amla and petersen don't have to play. wasted.
Iron, I watched most of todays play on the radio whilst driving around hence I didn't see the first session at all. However I was frustrated to learn that we had a 4-5 field early in the play hoping for leg side dismissals to a "plan" more than trying for knicks and catches by driving which would allow for a more attacking field. New ball, new wicket. Simple I'd have thought. It seems the attempted knowledge, simple yet effective, that Craig McDermott tried to impart on our bowlers and captain over his tenure was lost - aim for the top of off with swing and set an agressive field. If they drive you through the field you cop it....better than being worked around the corner or played through square. We'll never know whether with Starc if the Yarpies would be 3 fa (I'm happy with Siddle playing, no drama). I think we should have gone agressive first rather than being cute. Poor field placements means bowlers are compromised which = opporunities for batsman. That's me.

Very nice Rock. Obviously commentators did a good job accurately describing Hilfindunny and sids bowling wrong line on either side of the wicket respectively. young patto was the best of an unsuccessful trio. so much for the stupid alleged dossier. whoever wrote it should get the flick. You're quite right. back to basics; quicks aim to hit top of off stump, set field accordingly and plug away like McGrath used to.
But horse has bolted and it's going to be an uphill job for our bats to save this Test.
still maintain form bowler starc should have been in, given the difference he offered from an all right-arm battery.
I don't think Starc plays infront of Haus, Patto or Sids in this test. 6pm today may suggest he could of but I don't blame the sellectors for allowing the punters to think this. Either the coach, skipper or both must take responsibility for today's first session for the lack of mongrel and intent which one would normally expect fom the first session of a quality test series.
